Hilendarski Cloister

Opening times of the museum – only on prior request at 042/919 214

In 1979, in the yard of the church St. Dimitar was made a reconstruction of Hilendarski cloister, where the first monastery school was established. According to some historical information it existed from the second half of the eighteenth century and was destroyed in the burning of Stara Zagora in July 1877.

For three years (1855-1858), during his stay in Stara Zagora, the young Vasil Ivanov Kunchev lived there together with his uncle Hadzhi Basil who was a travelling monk from Hilandarski Monastery. He studied in St. Nikola class school and attended a course for priests organized by the teacher Atanas Ivanov.

The exhibition includes two reconstructions: a convent cell and a classroom from the second half of the nineteenth century made by a graphic drawing of Vasil Ivanov.

The photo-documentary exhibition "Levski in Stara Zagora» follows the major moments in the life of the Apostle of Freedom; his relationship with Eski Zagra (nowadays Stara Zagora), where he received “for the first time enlightenment for justice and freedom ..." and his role in building a local revolutionary organization.
