Chalcolithic Copper Mines

This is the largest mining center in Europe, where copper ore was mined in the V millennium BC - early and late Chalcolithic.

During archaeological research in 1971- 1974, from a Bulgarian-Russian team there were found 11 mines with a length of 10-15 m to 5-80 m, an average width of 3-10 m and 1-2 to 18-20 m. According to researchers’ calculation from the chalcolithic copper mines it was possible to produce 1000 tons of pure metal, a huge amount of antiquity.

The copper ore was exported in a vast region of Southeast Europe, as separate items made of copper. The produced ore in the area of Mechi kladenets reached the middle parts of Volga river.
