PREHISTORY DEPARTMENT

The archeological materials are arranged and displayed in different places. They have been found in entire or partial archeological excavations.
The Azmashka Tomb is the first thoroughly investigated mound in Southeast Europe.
The Museum has carried out archeological research work at a mound near the dam of Chatalka, and the different mounds in the villages, Madrets, Gudjovo and Kliselika. Some ancient settlements are found just off the village, Kaloyanovets.There is the Bereketska mound on the outskirts of Stara Zagora.
There is a “catalogue of pottery”, which contains articles collected from the surface of the archeological sites. Most of the archeological sites are processed by the system ‘AKB’.

ANCIENT ARCHAEOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The collections include about 8000 articles related to the Hellenic, Roman, Late Roman and Early Byzantium epochs.
The noteworthy research work has the culture of the people who had once lived in the Roman and early Byzantium town of Augusta Trayana – Beroe.
There are rich collections of bronze articles, chariots, weapons, glassware, jewellery, bedpans, tools, Thracian chariots, stone plastic arts, ancient and late ancient mosaics, all of which relate to the ancient town and its governed area.

MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY DEPARTMENT

We collect historical descriptions and monuments as well as the history of the town and its region. We investigate the local and the national medieval history and archeology for the period of 6th – 15th century. The investigations are carried out at medieval sites around Stara Zagora and its province.
Our department keeps more than 1500 articles – pottery, church plates, jewelry, and iron tools. The most important collections are the medieval plastic arts, early Byzantium and medieval tools, jewellery.
